- Library Assistant –
Under the direction of the Librarian, the Library Assistant provides a variety of Library Services to the students, teachers and staff at the Skaggs Catholic Center. This position is filled by two part-time employees whose hours overlap to provide coverage during Middle School lunch. The hours for this position are listed below:
Monday – Friday 10:15-3:45
(w/1/2 hr. unpaid lunch)
The Library Assistant will need to attend the Middle School Faculty meetings on the days that they are held. The Library Assistant is also required to work additional hours before and during Orientation Week in August, Finals weeks in December and May, Book Check dates in April/May, and the week after school is dismissed. In the event that one of the Library Assistants is ill, the other one will be asked to work additional hours.
The Library Assistant agrees to follow all Skaggs Catholic Center and Salt Lake City Diocesan policies found at https://www.dioslc.org. Must be able to work before, during and after school hours. In the absence of the Head Librarian, the Library Assistant must be able to work independently and manage the day-to-day activities in the Library.
Educational Requirements: Preferred 2 years or more of college.
Work Experience: Preferred experience working in a Library, educational setting, or bookstore.
Physical Requirements: Must be able to sit, stand, walk, bend, kneel, reach, lift 30 lbs., climb up and down a ladder, carry books, and push a full book cart.
Skills and Software Knowledge: Must be able to type at least 40 words/minute; has a working knowledge of Microsoft Word, Excel, PowerPoint and Google software (Gmail, Docs, Sheets, Drawing, etc.), and research databases such as Utah’s Online Library, including EBSCO, Gale Research, etc.)
Communication: Communicates verbally and in writing in a professional manner with students, teachers, faculty, parents, administrators, and the Librarian; reads and responds to school emails; coordinates all Library activities with the Librarian. Assists the Librarian with posting to Library social media sites.
Book and Textbook Management: Assists students and teachers in locating library materials, and pulls books as needed. Shelves fiction library books in alphabetical order and non-fiction library books in Dewey Decimal order. Also, pulls and shelves textbooks in the appropriate location in the Textbook Room. Assists with distributing, collecting and checking textbooks. Maintains the Library and Textbook Room shelves by keeping the books in correct order.
Circulation: Assists students and teachers with checking Library books, textbooks, equipment, and other materials in and out. Uses the library software system (Follett Destiny) for maintaining patron records, circulation, holds, overdues, collection of fines for lost or damaged books, deleting damaged or outdated books, etc. Assists with weeding outdated and damaged books, and book and equipment inventory.
Reader’s Advisory and Research Assistance: Assists students and teachers in locating books and other materials. Instructs patrons on the use and utilization of the Library Catalog (destiny.skaggscatholiccenter.org) as well as other websites and apps, including Novelist Plus, Goodreads, etc. Is familiar with Young Adult books and genres that appeal to students in grades 6-12. Assists students who need help using book and online resources and research strategies.
Data Entry and Retrieval: Assists with data entry and paperwork, including checking in new books, equipment, AV materials and magazines; updates the Master Classroom Library list; looks up books for new book orders; keeps accurate records and receipts; organizes and updates Book Condition Reports, etc.
Teaching Assistants and Volunteers: Assists the Librarian in training, supervising, and working with Teaching Assistants (TAs) and Volunteers.
Environment: Keeps the Library clean, attractive, and inviting, including public and work areas. Helps arrange Library furnishings as needed. Interacts with all visitors to the Library in a positive and welcoming manner.
Programming and Publicity: Assists Librarian with special programs, activities, tours, classes, contests, etc. Takes photographs and assists with advertising such events on school social media sites; prepares and hangs displays bulletin boards, fliers, signs, and decorations for the Library.
Monitor Student Behavior: Helps maintain order in the Library by enforcing the school and library rules and expectations. Reports problems to the Librarian and Dean.
Copy Cataloging and Processing: Locates existing MARC records for books, AV materials, and equipment; adds copies to Library catalog; prints and places spine, barcode and genre labels correctly on materials; covers books with dust jackets or contact paper; updates bibliographic records as directed by the Librarian.
Equipment: Maintains and cleans equipment and storage areas, and helps with equipment inventory. Keeps copier and printers filled with paper and cleared of jams. Troubleshoots and assists students with basic computer and printer questions or problems and reports problems to the Librarian and IT department.
Statistics: Collects and reports accurate Library statistics.
Collection Development: Suggests titles for replacement or addition to the Library collection.
Book Repair: Inspects books for damages and performs minor repairs.
