Summer Homework

Dear Parent/Guardian and Student,

Research shows that over the summer students lose 2 to 3 months of Math concepts and vocabulary for reading, which puts the student behind for the next level.  Teachers then have to play “catch up” which leads to gaps in learning.

To bridge the “summer math gap” we are requiring all students to review the first 20 lessons of the Saxon textbook and complete 2 tests. (these should be review lessons that have been previously learned concepts).    These 2 tests will be the first two grades for the school year.  The tests can only be taken one time.

The first test over lessons 1-10 will be available June 7 and MUST be completed by July 2 at 11:59 pm.

The second test over lessons 11-20 will be available July 5 and MUST be completed by August 6 at 11:59 pm.

The Saxon textbook is available online in Canvas. (http://juandiego.instructure.com)  You can access any of the lessons and answers at any time this summer and during the school year.  Students are not required to do all the problems in the lessons.  However, they should be looking at the concepts for understanding.  Students must understand the concepts in the lessons before the test is taken.

To bridge the “summer vocabulary gap in reading there is a required book and questions for each grade available in Canvas as well.  This will be the first grade in Language Arts.

Canvas can be accessed by using your school gmail account.  (http://juandiego.instructure.com)

Canvas will be available after June 7
